Notre Dame Wood Fired, Florida-Handled Stoneware Coffee Creamer

$38.00

This piece was fired for seven days in the University of Notre Dame's wood-fired Ana-gama (climbing kiln) at ND professor Bill Kremer's studio in Mid- May of 2021.

We added a combination of soda ash and baking soda to the kiln on day seven of the week-long firing of about 300 cups, mugs, teapots,
and large scale vessels. The soda helps flux the developing wood ash that has organically settled on the surface of the ware that results in a glass surface on the multi-hued pottery.

Often you will see white spots on the bottom of the forms. This is where wadding, a refractory material made to the consistency of cookie dough and rolled into marble-like shapes are glued to the pottery to prevent them from fusing to the shelves during the firing. These "marbles" resist melting up to 3000 degrees fahrenheit and are, usually, easily removed from the pottery upon the cooling of the kiln.

I utilized an old embossed Florida, The Sunshine State, license plate impression for the handle.

All my work seen here is safe for the dishwasher, microwave and everyday food and drink consumption. Enjoy!
