The batch of functional work done in earthenware clay was created in the summer of 2022 and fired in my electric kilns for both the bisque and glaze firings.
This piece is part of a series where I used earthenware clay and decorated the outside surface with series of underglaze colors. This series relates to the Abstract Expressionist movement primarily in North American visual art.
More specifically, these are three-dimensional color observations related to the work of Hans Hoffman where he did color studies that relate to the study of optics, and the understanding that warm colors visually advance and cool colors recede in a composition. This series is also related to background painting that is often seen in graffiti artists work in the industrial areas of the United States, particularly in the lower Great Lakes region, also known as the Rust Belt.
This work is food safe and ready for everyday use in the microwave, oven and dishwasher.
