Handmade Wood Fired Salt Glazed Knoxville Iowa Speedway slip designed Cup

This series of cups were part of my early December 2022 wood firing. The surface of the cups were decorated with a clay slip gleaned from the inside of turn 4 at Knoxville Speedway in Iowa.
I threw the mugs on the potters wheel with a stoneware clay body, fired the pieces to about 1950 Fahrenheit. Upon cooling, the forms were glazed on the inside with a food safe "liner" glaze. The outer surface was then painted with a series of stripes from clay slip that was dug out from the inside of turn 4 at Knoxville. The repeated stripes of this slip reference the multi-level armco barrriers that surround the outside of this famed race track.
The work was then fired to approximately 2300 degrees in early December 2022. The white markings found on the outside bottom (foot) of the cups are the result of a refractory clay that is rolled into marble like shapes and attached to the bottom of the clay pieces. This prevents the work from fusing permanently to the kiln shelves when everything inside the firing chamber turns to a fine liquid glass above 2180+ degrees Fahrenheit.
