This mug was in my December, 2022, 20 hour wood firing. I learned that starting the kiln immediately after a day of teaching High School Ceramics and then staying up all night and running out of wood at 3:30 a.m. was not the best of plans. Thank goodness it was cold enough that all the neighbors had their windows closed so they could not hear the log splitter running at 3:45 a.m.
Of the various sub-groups of pottery decoration that was in this firing this particular mug had a series of painted racetrack slip designs on the outer surface. In addition, I used an old powdered sugar sifter to sprinkle on a light coating of wood ash on some of the pots. This ash was kept over from previous firings and was utilized in hopes that it would add subtle color contrast to the various forms. This mug features a handle that was impressed onto an old Florida license plate and I used a small coil spring like wire to remove the form from the wheel, resulting in a herringbone pattern.
I attempted to fuse new ceramic techniques, the application of store bought colors, with early culture techniques of adding wood ash to help in the glass development stage on the pottery.
All of my kitchenware is safe for everyday use in the microwave, preheated oven and dishwasher. Enjoy!
