DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Racetrack Clay slip designed Whiskey Cup

This wood fired cup was one of a batch of approximately 280 pottery forms that were fired in my barrel arch wood kiln in early December, 2022. The stoneware clay body was decorated with a stripe of clay slip that was gleaned from the bodywork of our sprint car after a weekend of racing at DuQoin State Fairgrounds Race track, Illinois.
The race track clay is allowed to dry and then is sifted through a screen to remove debris and then slaked with water and blended to a cool Whip consistency. This slip is then painted on the surface of the cup and is intended to reference the unique quality of a particular race track. The indoor racetrack at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds is a tight 1/6 mile track where the driver is constantly turning while lapping the clay racetrack..
We ended this particular evening by being run over on a restart. The crash involved a flip so some of the clay on these mugs was gleaned from the top of the roll cage. Such is racing.
The white/lighter spots seen on the foot of the cup are the result of my having to attach a combination of refractory materials in the shape of a small gumdrop to prop up the pottery from the shelf. This prevents the pottery from fusing to the shelf at high (above 2100 fahrenheit) temperatures. One of the refractory materials (EPK) is the same Kaolin utilized in the white shiny ceramic insulators on spark plugs.
All of my wood fired stoneware is safe for everyday use in the kitchen, microwave and dishwasher.
