Handmade Wood Fired Salt Glazed Stoneware Cup with Sawyer Michigan Slip trailed decoration

This particular stoneware cup was one of approximately 230 pieces of pottery that was fired in my barrel arch wood kiln in early December 2022. Post-firing we found direct evidence that the kiln achieved at least 2300 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the chamber.
This series of cups with slip clay decoration was gleaned from a private residence in Sawyer, Michigan several years ago. I was helping friends and co-workers clear brush from a home/yard when we discovered a clay vein on the property. I took some home, allowed it to completely dry and then slaked it with water to a thin coffee creamer consistency (nice alliteration eh Language Arts Teachers?) The slurry was run through a screen to separate the small stones and other debris.
Next, the slip was allowed to settle so I could decant the clear water off the top and mix the remaining mixture to a Cool Whip consistency. I decorated the previously thrown stoneware cups with a food safe interior "liner" glaze and then added the Michigan slip in a series of stripes to contrast with impressed textures on the outer surface of the cup.
All of my functional pottery is safe for everyday use in the kitchen, dishwasher and microwave.
