This Wood fired stoneware piece was fired in one of my two autumn (mid-October and late November) firings in 2025. Each firing lasted 17 hours and achieved a temperature of about 2380 degrees Fahrenheit. During each firing, over 200 pots were unloaded after a three-day cooling period. The November firing, held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, involved stoking the kiln during a snowstorm that resulted in over a ten-inch accumulation from hour 4 until the last stoke. During the last 45 minutes of the firing, I add cylinders of table salt via angle iron into the firebox. The salt vaporizes and helps to complete the fluxing of the wood ash which is the glass coating on the outer surface of the pottery.
The clay slip that was added to the wheel thrown form was gleaned from our sprint car after a massive crash during a heat race at Waynesfield Speedway, Ohio.
