This vase was thrown on the potters wheel from a white stoneware clay body. When leatherhard (half dry) it was covered with a liquid slip clay the consistency of cool Whip (a nod to Peter Griffin) to the rhythm of music by the group "Tool". This piece was fired in my flat top updraft wood kiln on Monday, December 7, 2020 for a 12 hour fast firing. The side of the vase that was facing the back of the kiln displays what is known as flashing, the development of a darker carbon surface due to the lack of oxygen in the kiln during the stoking process that takes place every 5 to 10 minutes of the 12 hour duration. The side facing the front of the kiln has more of a buff/pampered chef baking stone appearance which indicated less wood ash melted on the front side of the vessel. The inner wall and floor of the container was glazed in my Rutile Floating Blue for ease of cleaning and waterproofing for fresh cut flowers.
