Wood Fired Salt Glazed Cup with Plymouth Speedway, Indiana Clay slip

$20.00

This piece was part of a batch of work fired in my wood kiln on January 24 for 14 hours. While it was snowy and below freezing the entire time outdoors it was actually a nice day with the fresh snow and almost no wind while I was stoking the kiln. This particular kiln is quite small and only used three wheelbarrows full of mostly maple and a bit of pine. The pine is sort of like nitrous oxide in a dragster. It helps give the kiln an extra push at the top end of the firing cycle.

My functional wood fired pieces will often have three or four lighter "marks" on the pot. This is where the piece was propped up off the shelf with a combination of two clay materials that resist melting. One of the these materials is the white shiny part found on spark plugs and is mined outside of Gainesville, Florida. This material keeps the pottery from fusing to the shelves while firing takes place.

This particular cup displays diagonal stripes of clay slip that was scraped off our sprint car after a nights racing at Plymouth Speedway, Indiana, pre-pandemic.
