This ovoid vessel was one of a series of pieces fired during the winter solstice, 2020. We had unusually warm weather in the lower Great Lakes region so I figured I would celebrate being outside in the dark trying hard not to trip over a wheelbarrow full of wood! Thank goodness for cheap coffee in large quantities and backpacker headlamps! This piece was fired for 20 hours and achieved a top end temperature of just about 2300 degrees Fahrenheit.
The slight variance in color is due to the flame path around the pottery in concert with the adequate amount of, or lack of oxygen during the stoking/climbing cycles that are part of wood fired pottery. I, like so many other wood fired potters, add salt to the kiln toward the end of the stoking process. This addition of sodium encourages the melting (fluxing) of the wood ash that accumulates on the pottery over the course of the firing.
This form was first thrown on the wheel as a hollow cylinder and then squeezed into an oval after being cut off my potters wheel. After attaching a slab of clay to the foot, I attached handles by impressing a scallop shell taken from the beach at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
After leather hard (half-dry) I then painted a clay slip design that was scraped off our Mini-sprint car raced at DuQuoin Speedway, Illiois in last years, 2020 USAC Shamrock Classic.
This piece is waterlight and holds 26 fluid ounces if it were utilized for a floral display.
