This piece was part of a batch of work fired in my wood kiln on January 24 for 14 hours. While it was snowy and below freezing the entire time outdoors it was actually a nice day with the fresh snow and almost no wind while I was stoking the kiln. This particular kiln is quite small and only used three wheelbarrows full of mostly maple and a bit of pine. The pine is sort of like nitrous oxide in a dragster. It helps give the kiln an extra push at the top end of the firing cycle.
My functional wood fired pieces will often have three or four lighter "marks" on the pot. This is where the piece was propped up off the shelf with a combination of two clay materials that resist melting. One of the these materials is the white shiny part found on spark plugs and is mined outside of Gainesville, Florida. This material keeps the pottery from fusing to the shelves while firing takes place.
This lidded vessel was thrown on the wheel and then coated with a porcelain slip to give a creamy/whipped topping surface texture. The neck of the form was painted in a cobalt blue stain for color contrast. This vessel holds 67 fluid ounces when filled to the top of the interior glazed surface. The bottom of the outer wall displays my LCP stamp signifying my pottery studio.
